Evaluation - Part 1 (Summery of Brief)
The aim of my brief was to produce the first two minutes of a British Social Realism film for Film 4 aimed towards 16-24 year olds.
I think I met the brief exceptionally well as I kept to the typical BSR conventions for example I used un-experienced actors and real locations whilst the production.
The title of the film I produced is 'Intifada'. This is the Arabic word for 'change'. This connotes that the themes of the film include religion and also Aspiration and escape. The title connotes religion as the typography is in a religion style as well as the language of the title. Also the fact that the title is on the video of the police arresting someone, the title connotes that this situation changes the persons life and is a very important event in the film. The title connotes that the main characters of the film are different religions to the other people and the meaning of the title anchors this. The title connotes the theme of British Social Realism as it is typical of this genre of films to have one word as their film name with a significant meaning to it.
As noted in the treatment, the opening establishes the close relationship between two brothers. We did this by using an action montage. The first few shots denote the brothers playing football together and hanging around with each other. We also denote a scene where the older brother gets arrested and goes to jail, causing the younger brother to investigate the reasons why. We then show a black out screen of six years later and reveal that the older brother is released from jail.

We also connote the theme of violence by showing weapons such as a gun and a knife which you see when the younger brother opens the drawer (1:27). This is typical of a BSR film as in This is England you see a lot of weapons such as a butcher knife in the scene where the young boy goes into shop and is backed up by the older guy.
Lastly we connote the theme of Religion by showing that the main characters are Muslim in the mise en scene of the opening such as the religious paintings in the background. . Also the typography of the opening also connotes the theme of religion.
